A SPECIAL WEEK

3/30/2016

I am looking forward to next week, actually Monday, April 4 thru Sunday, the 10th.
On Monday 4/3 the baseball season starts for me when my Diamondbacks host the Rockies. On Thursday the Masters Tournament begins at Augusta National Golf Club.

BASEBALL
I grew up as a Yankee fan with my dad, Mickey and Yogi.
Later in life I became a bigger fan of the National League whose teams I had hated (baseball term) when they met my Yanks in the World Series.
The National League was formed in 1876 with 8 teams, 4 called 'Stockings'
  - Boston and Cincinnati (both Red), Chicago (White), and St Louis (Brown).
The other teams were
-Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, NY Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics.
The 1st game played was on 4/22/1876 in Philadelphia. Boston beat Philly 6-5.

The American League was formed in 1901 and promoted their silly (Americans-want-more-offense) idea with the DH rule in 1973.
Designated Hitter: my reason to switch to the NL.
Not a fan of inter-league play either.

Nothing better than being at a live baseball game, as long as it is a Little League, high school, college, or sandlot game. I can't take the Major League circus ball parks anymore. Distractions.
Too many people who are not there to watch the game and activities that have nothing to do with a baseball game. Distractions.
Food, souvenirs, yelling at the ump or players and coaches, are all okay.
Loud music, flashing lights, bringing your dog, Star Wars Day, $150+ tickets, $6 Cokes, etc.? Not okay.
I'll watch my MLB on TV with great camera work and slo-mo replays, without so-called fans walking in front of me every few seconds.
I can mute the commercials or pause the game if my dog needs to go out.

See you in the World Series, AL.

1- St. Patrick's Day
So, it is St. Patricks Day.
March 17 is my dear French-Canadian Honorary Italian mother's birthday.
That's what we celebrated. Still celebrate. On the Irish day.
Mom made us corned beef and cabbage on her birthday.
We miss you, Mom. Every day.

Taryn, Stinger, Maguire was Irish. Even had red hair.
On his birthday, September 26, about a month after his death, his caddie, Jimmy Griffin, cooked a corned beef and cabbage dinner for Bruce and Genny DelReno and Ben and Irene Samuel. Bruce remarked that he liked corned beef and cabbage a lot, and the best part was the carrots boiled in the broth. "Why was it only served once a year?"

I think Bruce took care of that problem.
Me, too. My Irish wife makes it more than one time per year.

3-BASEBALL...yes, I'm ready.
RE: new 2B rule...when sliding into second base the runner must slide directly toward the base and not toward the player to 'take him out'. Also, the player with the ball must touch the base; no longer will the 'in the vicinity' interpretation be allowed.
I get that a sliding player's primary intent should be to get safely to the base, and, secondly, to try and prevent the other from tagging him, the base, or throwing to another base. The slider's first intention should not be the latter, especially if he is a dead duck (knows he cannot reach the base in time). Safety. I get that.
But, now the sliding player must slide directly to the base, and the defensive player must absolutely touch the base. To me, that is inviting more collisions, assuming the slider is still able to 'take out' the defender if both reach the base at the same time. Which is a good baseball play and has been since Abner. So, why not just say the runner must slide into the base, and keep the vicinity thing which is for safety (to prevent some collisions). If he runs the other player down instead of sliding directly to the base, kick him out of the game, Ump.

4-RECIPE
Trisha Yearwood's  Chocolate Saltines. Who knew Mrs. Garth Brooks was a good cook?
Well , she has a Food Network show, and some of those cooks are good.
This looked easy, so I tried it.
And, the salty-sweet thing.
Ate them all except the one I gave to my wife.

                                              SALTINE CHOCOLATE TREATS
-Preheat oven to 350.
-Line a sided cookie sheet with parchment paper.
-Cover entire sheet with SALTINES, one layer, touching each other.
-In a saucepan melt 1 cup BUTTER,
then add 1 cup + 2TBS  BROWN SUGAR and simmer 3 minutes.
-pour over saltines and spread evenly.
-Bake for 5 minutes.
-Remove from oven and sprinkle 1 bag (12 oz) CHOCOLATE CHIPS evenly.
-Cover with foil and bake 3 minutes.
-Remove from oven and spread chocolate evenly with spatula.
-Sprinkle with 2/3 cup chopped toasted PECANS, or walnuts, or almonds.
-Cover with foil and freeze for 30 minutes.
-Break into pieces and store in airtight container.

5- POLITICS
I don't usually mention politics or religion or NBA or erotica here. Or there.
Especially here. Or, at the golf club.
I thought the GWBush years would be the end of his party. I thought 'how can anybody still be a Republican after that?'
'How could it get worse?'
(The remainder of this rant will remain unwritten for lack of space.)
Except for this.
I have some dear and intelligent friends.

People that I want keep as friends, people with whom I really do not want to talk politics.
Because I don't get it.
How and why do they want an insane egotistical showman and liar to be our president?
I hope it's because they know something I don't, or they are in on the ruse, and not because they're in any of those hateful  -ist groups.
I hope it's not because it says (R) after his name, because he's not.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the last Republican.
